ICE says no to automatic body-cams
Axios ·

ICE is rejecting a Government Accountability Office recommendation for technology that automatically activates body cameras when weapons are drawn and safeguards to ensure agents record arrests, searches and detentions when required. Why it matters: The GAO warns that ICE risks losing crucial evidence on what happened during incidents involving force amid growing distrust over agent accountability in the wake of multiple fatal ICE shootings . At five sites, people said they weren't sure how to use a newer camera model. The other side: DHS rejected the recommendation, arguing that automatic activation "presents significant operational risks, including inadvertent or false activations during routine movement." DHS warned that accidental activation could expose sensitive interactions with informants and victims or record people engaged in protected First Amendment activities. GAO p
