A Misty History of Portugal : The Visigoth Monarchy 585 to 711 CE
Portugal News ·
The Visigoths (western Goths) were a people of Germanic descent who were forced by the invasive Huns to leave their homeland in Romania and seek asylum in the east Roman Empire region of the southern Balkans. They were not well received by the Roman administration whose harassment provoked the battle of Adrianopolis in 378 CE. Surprisingly, the highly trained legions of Rome were defeated by the Gothic cavalry and the Emperor Valens was killed.
